Draw with a skin marking pen the anterior joint line of the Ankle joint on a model in the Anatomical position with side lighting and a time limit of one minute.

Objective No 113 - Criteria to be demonstrated.

1. Palpate the Lateral Malleolus of the Fibula (Objective No 103).

2. Note that the tip of the Lateral Malleolus of the Fibula projects Approximately 1.5cms below the Medial Malleolus of Tibia and lies on a more posterior plane.

3. Palpate the Medial Malleolus of the Tibia (Objective No 101).

4. Note that the Medial Malleolus of the Tibia forms a blunt, visible subcutaneous prominence on the medial aspect of the Ankle and lies on a more anterior plane in respect of the Lateral Malleolus of Fibula.The inferior edge of the Medial Malleolus lies approximately 1.5cms above the tip of the Lateral Malleolus.

5. Note that the Anterior and inferior edge of the shaft of Tibia adjacent to the Medial Malleolus can be palpated.

6. Mark a point 2cms above the tip of the Lateral Mallolus and mark a point 1cm above the inferior border of the Medial Malleolus and join.

7. This line represents the horizontal component of the ankle joint.

8. Support the foot and passively Plantar and Dorsiflex the Ankle Joint. Palpate along the anterior and inferior edge of the shaft of Tibia adjacent to the Medial Malleolus of the Tibia.Palpate and detect the Joint line.

9.The remaining joint line is obscured by Tendons crossing the anterior aspect of the Ankle joint.
