Draw with a skin marking pen the projected outline of the Iliac Crest on a model in the Anatomical position with side lighting and a time limit of one minute.

Objective No 86 - Criteria to be demonstrated.

1. Request the model to lie down in the position of supine lying with palmar surface of hands on hips, thumbs placed on the Lumbar area. The tip of the little finger will rest on or close to the blunt prominence of the Anterior Superior Iliac Spine.

2. The Anterior Superior Iliac Spine marks the anterior commencement of the Iliac Crest and in a thin model is clearly visible below the skin.

3. Palpate the Anterior Iliac spine and move upwards and in a posterior direction along the Iliac Crest for about five centimetres and a prominent bony feature can be palpated between the finger tip and thumb. This feature is the Tubercle of the crest.

4. A line drawn between the tubercles of the Iliac Crest cuts the upper border of the spinous process of the fifth Lumbar vertebra.

5. Continue palpation along the Iliac Crest. The mid-point between the Anterior Superior Iliac Spine and the termination of the Iliac Crest at the Posterior Superior Iliac Spine is reached.

6. The palpating finger tip continues to rise as it moves along the Iliac Crest and the Summit is reached.

7. A line drawn between the summits of the Iliac Crests cuts through an interval between the Spinous Processes of the Third and Fourth Lumbar Vertebrae.

8. Continue palpation as the Iliac Crest descends and it can be traced medially to its termination at the Posterior Superior Iliac Spine.

9. The position of the Posterior Superior Iliac Spine is indicated by a dimple , five centimetres from the Median Plane which overlies the Posterior Superior Iliac Spine.

10. A line drawn between the two dimples marking the position of the Posterior Iliac Spines cuts through the body of the Second Sacral Vertebra.
